Network Routing
While a computer network can be simple,
consisting of as few as two computers, much of
the enterprise networks today operate on a large
scale, with complex layers and multiple routers
and networking devices working together. Types of Networks:
Some of the most common types of networks
include: |
|
-
Local Area Network (LAN): a single location
network of computers, such as a workgroup of
computers
- Wide Area Network (WAN): a communications
network covering a large geographic area, often
used as transmission areas by telephone carriers
or other utilities
Networks consist of seven layers: physical, data
link, network, transport, session, presentation
and application. Each layer provides a specific
function, as it relates to the other layer, in
the networking process. Routers are hardware
devices placed at various layers in the
networking process to assist in the transfer of
information.
Network Routers provide secure, wire-speed
delivery of crucial enterprise information. The
cost of network routers vary by application, but
PC technology has enabled router manufacturers
to offer quality and performance at lower price
points.
